The world’s most equalizing pandemic, CODVID-19 caught us by surprise. I call it an equalizer because the wealthy and the poor, the young and old are all affected, although at different levels, some being more vulnerable than others.
The studio called gym is temporarily closed until life can go back to normal, perhaps a ‘new normal’. However, this does not mean we stop being active, it just mean we have to find alternative ways to remain healthy in self isolation and during the lock-down. Like every fitness fanatic would attest, “fitness is a lifestyle, not just an activity,” and this applies 365 days a year, with or without gym access. I hope that, you might find the ideas I share with you valuable as you remain healthy and active despite the circumstances.
The benefits of exercising
Given the uncertainties resulting from the pandemic raising high levels of anxieties which could potentially lead to mental health issues, it is advisable to keep exercising. Exercising can reduce chances of being affected by mental health issues. As the old saying goes, “prevention is better than cure.” We should keep exercising and consume healthy diet to reach and/or maintain our body goals and mental fitness. There is a relationship between exercising and healthy mind and body. Regular exercise can make you feel happier, help you lose and/or gain weight (it is good for your muscles and bones). It also increases your energy levels as well as reduces your risks of chronic diseases. Furthermore, it can help with skin health, memory and quality of sleep, according to healthline.
Get started and be consistent
I can attest that it is not easy as it sounds, and it is even much more demanding when you have restrictions of not accessing the gym anymore as well as other stressors related to the lockdown. BUT, the pressure is not so much in the eating, and keeping active. I once experienced a sudden change in my life, like now in lockdown, back in 2018 I lost my job. I had so much time on my hands. This meant, I could either use my time to sob and feel sorry for myself or I could use it to my advantage. The great part of it all was that, I was already a gym fanatic, but this is not the case with everyone. However, I was not C-O-N-S-I-S-T-E-N-T.
The C-word is what will give you motivation during this period. Consistency coupled with discipline is a killer combination for your body goals and healthy mind. It needs you to be resolute and committed to the vision.
My goal was simple, I wanted to regain my mental health back and a healthy body. This did not only offer me body transformation but I also had fun discovering what my body could do. Again, every fitness enthusiast will tell you that…
body goals can be achieved by a combination of 80% diet and 20% workout regime.
You can start small, running in the yard or looking up homework-outs to work on your abs, upper body and even those gluts for gains. In this case, auntie Google is your friend.
There are a number of benefits to being active in addition to having a great body to flaunt post lockdown. We become more confident about ourselves when we feel good. Ultimately, there are different reasons why people exercise. The take away from this is that, we need to invest in our health, both mental and physical.
Our bodies do not only survive on the nutrition we get from food. As motivation, think about the person you are becoming during this lockdown when you apply consistency and discipline. And apart from reaching your body goals and mental strength, your confidence will increase, these habits will help you become successful in anything you pursue even post-lockdown.
